Immense views and superb photo opportunities beckon from this sparkling jewel in Glacier National Park’s crown.

The tour begins at the Rising Sun boat dock, centrally located on St. Mary Lake, approximately five miles from Glacier National Park’s east entrance at the town of St. Mary.

Conveniently accessible right off of the Going-to-the-Sun road, and offering vastly different views on the water not visible from the road, the boat will take you on a close drive-by of the famed Wild Goose Island and provides epic, 360 degree views of the surrounding peaks. You’ll see Sexton Glacier, tiny islands, the remnants of Great Northern Railway President Louis Hill’s private cabin, and brightly colored mountainsides. It also allows for a variety of easy and moderate hiking opportunities from the head of the lake.

Info about the hike:

HIKING CAPACITY LIMITED. Call early to make a reservation.

If you choose to do the ranger-led hike to St. Mary Falls (10:00 a.m. or 2:00 p.m.), you will depart from the boat at the upper dock, hike to St. Mary Falls and then catch a return boat later in the day. For example, if you take the 10:00 a.m. tour, hike to St. Mary Falls you can catch the 12:00 p.m. boat back, which would be at the upper dock at 12:40 p.m.

The hike to St. Mary Falls takes you through a fantastic mix of old and new growth forest that was affected by the Reynolds Creek forest fire in 2015. Witness the rapid regrowth of beautiful wildflowers in the freshly burned forest and the large fir and spruce that were unaffected by the fire. Views of the immense mountains at the head of the lake get better with every step! You’ll soon hear and see the thunder of the waterfalls ahead, spend time at the falls, take photos and enjoy! Round-trip this hike is three miles with gentle slopes. Hikers should be prepared with sturdy shoes (trail can be muddy depending on weather) and clothing for adverse weather. Thunderstorms can occur with little warning in the mountains. Also bring plenty of water and food for the three and a half hour boat and hike time.

If you wish to hike on your own, all boat trips except for the 6:30 p.m. scenic cruise dock at the head of the lake and allow for hiking. Be aware that if you miss the 4:45 p.m. pick-up, there will not be another boat returning to pick you up. It is an easy hike from the upper boat dock to the Going to the Sun Road where it may be possible to catch the free shuttle back to Rising Sun (depending on time of year). Ask your boat captain about return times and hiking options.

Rising Sun boat dock is accessible and right off of the famed Going-to-the-Sun road.

If you’re coming from the west side and heading east, Rising Sun is about 12 miles down the road from Logan Pass. The turn is on your right, across from the Rising Sun campground.
